Abstract

ABSTRACT Research methodology is a fundamental component in producing systematic and accountable scientific work, especially in engineering fields characterized by high precision and practical application. This study is grounded in the importance of selecting appropriate methodological approaches to design engineering research that is valid, reliable, and relevant to technological and industrial needs. The aim of this article is to explore various research methodologies—quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods—and to present their practical applications in engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. This article employs a literature review method, drawing from methodological textbooks and peer-reviewed international journal articles, supported by selected case studies demonstrating methodological applications in engineering research. The findings reveal that the quantitative approach remains the most widely used in engineering research due to its ability to measure, test, and predict phenomena objectively. However, qualitative and mixed methods are increasingly adopted, especially in studies involving human interaction with technological systems. The choice of methodology significantly influences the success of engineering research in terms of result accuracy and technological implementation effectiveness. This article is expected to serve as a methodological reference for engineering researchers in designing structured, contextual, and impactful research.
